We keep things active and fun for all our children attending preschool. Regular Forest School sessions in the summer term, Lila Yoga alternate Thursday pm's throughout the year (day may change), Tammi time, a multi sport activity session with a qualified PE teacher in summer an or autumn term. We try to have visitors or visits out and about, recently to: Tesco - food to fork trail, The Bear Trail, a farm for lambing and calving, the stream in the village for dipping. Visits from Police, Fire service, Doctor, a violinist and older children from the school to share their learning.

What is Forest School?

Forest school is a fun, friendly concept of outdoors education, which has become hugely popular in recent years. The concept involves children being supervised at a woodland site, learning about the natural world. They are taught how to use tools safely and make useful objects, this contributes to developing their physical skills, working together as a team and learning to explore their world and their own limits in a safe way. Typical activities in the woods include shelter building, cooking over a campfire, making wooden mallets, nature detective walks, bug hunts, craft activities using natural materials, story-telling and games like hide and seek.

The benefits of running a preschool Forest School

The children gain a huge amount from their forest school experience. They are confident to try this new activity as we are lucky enough to offer it in our woodland area (shared with Thorverton Primary) & garden with familiar staff. It’s wonderful to hear them all talking about their fun morning, to smell wood smoke and to see the lovely craft and the smiles as they tell their parents at the end of the day.

We believe that the outdoor environment increases their self-esteem, confidence, concentration, their enthusiasm for learning and we can see the benefits in all areas of their learning – Forest School fosters active learners and explorers, just what we all want for our children.

What is Lila Yoga?

Our classes are a perfect way to enhance a child’s early learning and development through storytelling, action songs and moves inspired by yoga, led by a qualified Yoga teacher.

The sessions underpin the four themes of the Early Years Foundation Stage:

1. A Unique Child
‘Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.’Through Yoga children learn valuable skills to help their confidence and self esteem.

2. Positive Relationships
‘Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.’Children are encouraged to express themselves vocally and physically which helps them to gain independence.

3. Enabling Environments
‘The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.’In a safe and familiar environment and among friends, children learn more easily.

4. Learning and Development
‘Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of Learning and Development are equally important and inter-connected.’Children are taught Yoga through story based themes that make them a part of the adventure, which helps make learning more of a fun and realistic experience.
